Myth and Legend

Ambalangoda has been the centre of Sri Lanka’s mask-making tradition for centuries. Your photography excursion begins with the selection of wood in the timber yards and moves through to the carvers’ workshops, where the raw blocks are cut and shaped by hand. Following the process, you document the painting of the masks in vivid colours and learn of their ritual symbolism. Every mask tells a story — of gods, demons, and the ancient Kolam and Sanni traditions that have defined the culture of the south coast.

The excursion culminates in a traditional dance performance where the masks come alive. With the guidance of the craftsmen who keep the tradition alive, Myth and Legend takes you through the entire mask-making process from the timber yards to the final performance.
